James Adler Premieres New Work with the Lesbian and Gay Big Apple Corps Symphonic Band

Oct. 30, 2009

Founded in 1979, the Lesbian and Gay Big Apple Corps Symphonic Band, led by conductor Brian P. Worsdale, celebrate their 30th anniversary with a special concert reflecting on 30 years of pride through music featuring a commissioned work by James Adler, Allegro Scherzando: A Celebration for Piano and Concert Band. Also appearing as guest soloist of the evening, James Adler comments:

When Brian P. Worsdale invited me to participate in tonight's special celebratory concert, works by Gershwin, Grieg or Rachmaninoff first came to mind. But the more Brian described his concert vision, a shorter and joyously upbeat concept took over. This new nine minute work is adapted from my 1980 piano concerto. It has more flourishes, fleshed out harmonies, and a brassier (perhaps jazzier) "take" on piano vs. ensemble. It also has moments of ensemble vs. ensemble, with the piano offering commentary which is sometimes in jest and sometimes insistent. My goal in creating this work: fun. Fun to play, and hopefully, fun to listen to.

Worsdale leads the Big Apple Corps through their 30th anniversary concert on Saturday, November 14 at Symphony Space located on Manhattan's upper west side.
