In Memoriam: Raymond Leppard, CBE

We are saddened to report the passing of Raymond Leppard, CBE. Acclaimed conductor, harpsichordist, composer, and editor, Maestro Leppard (b. 1927) was instrumental in bringing about the revival of Baroque music performance during the 1960s, when he was one of the first major conductors to perform works by great masters of the Baroque era, including Claudio Monteverdi and Francesco Cavalli. Leppard created several realizations of opera scores including Monteverdi’s L’OrfeoIl ritorno di Ulisse in patria, and L’incoronazione di Poppea, and others. A composer of great international renown, Raymond Leppard wrote the scores for the movies “Lord of the Flies” (1963) and “Alfred the Great” (1969), and he arranged and conducted the score for “The Hotel New Hampshire” (1984). He conducted works from early to contemporary at the Metropolitan Opera, the San Francisco Opera, New York City Opera, Hamburg State Opera, Glyndebourne, the Royal Opera House in London, and more. Leppard was music director of the Indianapolis Symphony from 1987-2001 and served as music advisor to the Louisville Orchestra from 2004-2006. In 1973, he was awarded the title of Commendatore della Republica Italiana for services to Italian music and received an honorary Doctor of Letters from the University of Bath that same year. In 1983, Queen Elizabeth II appointed him a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE).

Schott New York is pleased to offer the publication, Mozart Violin Cadenzas, which includes Raymond Leppard's original cadenzas for Mozart's violin concertos Nos. 1-5 and 7; Adagio in E Major, K. 261; Rondo in C Major, K. 373; and Serenade in D Major “Haffner,” K. 250. This important new publication was edited by violinist Cho-Liang Lin, for whom Leppard's cadenzas were originally written.
