Howard Shore Joins Schott

Schott Music is proud to announce the signing of Howard Shore, one of the most respected, honored and active composers of film and concert music working today. Setting the standard for evocative and expressive film scores including The Lord of the Rings trilogy, Shore creates music that is instantly recognizable and resonates long beyond the life of the film. His concert music is regularly performed by the world's leading orchestras in many of the most prestigious venues worldwide.
Shore conducted the world premiere performance of The Lord of the Rings Symphony in Wellington, New Zealand in November 2003 celebrating the release of The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King. Since its premiere, the work has been performed internationally in such noted venues as Moscow's Kremlin Palace Theater, the Odeon Herod Atticus in Athens, London's Royal Albert Hall and Cleveland's Severance Hall. Shore's scores for The Lord of the Rings trilogy have received four Grammy Awards and three Oscars including "Best Song" for "Into the West" as well as honors and awards from leading critic associations.
A short list of other international performances of Howard Shore's music includes the Royal Festival Hall with the London Philharmonic Orchestra; the Seville Film Music Festival in Spain; Cinesonic's 1st International Conference on Film Scores and Sound Design in Melbourne, Australia; and the National Arts Centre in Ottawa, Canada. In November 2000, Shore conducted the world premiere Concert to Projection of his original score to David Cronenberg's Naked Lunch. The performance was part of the Belfast Festival at Queens, in Belfast, Ireland, and featured Ornette Coleman and the Ulster Orchestra. Naked Lunch Concert to Projectionwas performed in March 2001 at the Barbican Centre in London and also at Pan Hall in Tokyo, Japan. The Brood was performed as part of a David Cronenberg retrospective in Paris and was heard again in June 2003 in Mexico City alongside the world premiere of music from Spider. In addition, Shore's chamber music has been featured on Arabesque Record's "Reel Life - The Private Music of Film Composers Vol. 1."
Shore began his career as a member of the group Lighthouse, with whom he recorded and toured from 1969 to 1972. He was the original Musical Director of Saturday Night Live and conducted SNL's live broadcasts from 1975 to 1980. Concurrently, Shore began collaborating with director David Cronenberg on several groundbreaking films and to date has scored 12 of Cronenberg's films including The Fly, Dead Ringers, Naked Lunch, AHistory of Violence and Eastern Promises.
Shore continues to distinguish himself with a wide range of projects, from Martin Scorsese's The Departed, The Aviator, Gangs of New York and After Hours to Tim Burton's Ed Wood; and Jonathan Demme's The Silence of the Lambs. In 2007, Shore was the recipient of an honorary Doctor of Letters degree from York University and among the many institutions that have honored him are The National Board of Review, Recording Academy Honors, The Hollywood Foreign Press, The Broadcast Film Critics, Chicago Film Critics, The British Academy of Film And Television Arts, Canada's Genie Awards, Belgium's World Soundtrack Awards, and New York's Gotham Awards.
Howard Shore is currently writing The Fly, an opera commissioned by Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris and Los Angeles Opera. The opera's libretto is by David Henry Hwang and David Cronenberg will direct. The world premiere is scheduled for July 2008 at the Châtelet and September 2008 at LA Opera.
