Honoring Luigi Dallapiccola: 50 Years Since His Passing

Jan. 31, 2025

This year – February 19th to be exact – marks the 50th anniversary of the death of one of the greatest composers of the 20th century, the Italian Luigi Dallapiccola. A key figure in the history of music, he was a pioneer of dodecaphonic experimentation in Italy and a mentor to many students who are now considered among the leading composers of the latet twentieth century, such as Luciano Berio, Bruno Maderna, Luigi Nono, and Camillo Togni.

Dallapiccola's life demonstrated a perfect example of the tight compenetration between artistic life and social commitment, and his music can be read today as a diary of the 20th century: from the horrors of war and the fascist regime, which hindered his career by labeling him a subversive, to his efforts in the rebirth of post-war musical life, in which he played a leading role with tireless dedication.

SZ Sugar, the new name since 2024 of the historic Edizioni Suvini Zerboni founded in Milan in 1907, was Luigi Dallapiccola’s publishing house, and here he always found support and full understanding of his artistic intentions. Today, the SZ Sugar catalog proudly includes nearly the entirety of his works, as well as invaluable archival materials: a unique legacy, which they are honored to preserve, represent, and promote.

Several notable performances of Luigi Dallapiccola's works will take place in the coming months, including:
