Henri Dutilleux: 100th Anniversary, US Performances and Grammy Nominations

January 22 marks the 100th anniversary of Henri Dutilleux’s birth. Born in Angers in 1916, Dutilleux created a personal and distinctive musical language glowing with tonal originality and visual radiance with its foundations in the traditions of Maurice Ravel, Albert Roussel and Claude Debussy. Although always intensely aware of the prevailing trends of the second half of the 20th century, he searched for his own individual solutions and his great popularity with audiences confirmed his instincts.

In honor of the occasion, several performances are scheduled around the world, including major events with the Boston and Toronto Symphony Orchestras. On January 14 and 16, Francois-Xavier Roth leads the Boston Symphony Orchestra in performances of Le temps l’horloge for soprano and orchestra, with soloist Renee Fleming. On January 27 and 28, soprano Barbara Hannigan joins the Toronto Sympony Orchestra for performances of Correspondances, led by Peter Oundjian. Additional performances this month include L’arbre des songes with the Staatskapelle Berlin (Jan 9, 10), the London Symphony Orchestra (Jan 13), and the Vienna Philharmonic (Jan 27) as well as Sur le même accord with the BBC National Orchestra of Wales (Jan 22). 

The Seattle Symphony’s recent recording of Dutilleux’s L’arbre des songes has received two nominations for the 58th Annual GRAMMY Award in the categories of “Best Classical Instrumental Solo” and “Best Orchestral Performance.” The album features violinist Augustin Hadelich as soloist, with Ludovic Morlot leading the orchestra.
