Heinz Holliger Celebrates 75

We offer our heartfelt congratulations to our own Heinz Holliger on the occasion of his 75th birthday this month. Holliger’s advocacy for contemporary music, through his esteemed career as an oboist, as well as his vast compositional output of fascinating and challenging works, continues to inspire musicians and composers worldwide.

Holliger recently conducted a production of his opera Schneewittchen (Snow White) in Basel to sold-out audiences and unanimous public acclaim. This milestone of contemporary opera demonstrates his ability to combine highly complex musical structures with the ambitious tonal language that characterizes his output to create a grandiose musical-theatrical experience. His consummate skills are built on his artistry of instrumentation and his understanding of human beings as producers and recipients of sounds.

His substantial compositional output, including five chamber operas, eight solo concertos, orchestral works, lieder and chamber music, is celebrated in a series of concerts over the next few weeks. At the Rose Theatre in New York, the Orchestra of St. Luke’s performs the US premiere of Holliger’s Ostinato funebre on May 31 as part of the New York Philharmonic Biennial Festival, conducted by Pablo Heras-Casado. To coincide with Holliger’s anniversary, Schott has also issued a new catalogue of his works. We wish him a very happy birthday and look forward to our future collaboration together for many years to come.
