Hans Werner Henze's The Bassarids Bows in Amsterdam
Jan. 01, 2006
The one-act music drama that Henze and his librettists, W.H. Auden and Chester Kallman, fashioned from Euripides' The Bacchae has recently completed a hugely successsful run at the Het Muziektheater Amsterdam. Writing in the Financial Times, Andrew Clark comments: "The beauty of The Bassarids is not just its dramatic compactness or quasi-symphonic conception…it is the accuracy and vitality with which Henze posits the age-old conflict between Spirit and Eros, reason and chaos."
