Hannah Lash's This Ease in German Premiere with the Philharmonisches Staatsorchester Mainz

On March 6, the Philharmonisches Staatsorchester Mainz presents the German premiere of Hannah Lash’s chamber orchestra work This Ease. Hermann Bäumer conducts.

Commissioned by the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, the 15-minute work premiered in April 2014 led by Jeffrey Kahane. Lash shares some insight into the work:

This Ease is a piece that sits on the edge of something familiar: we have heard certain colors before – the harp, the bells, the slow choral-like harmonic ground in the strings – and yet it is a piece that seeks to disrupt and question these familiar elements very subtly.

The German premiere is part of the orchestra’s annual contemporary music focus, which includes a moderated discussion and audience interaction, after which the audience votes for its favorite work on the program. Also featured on the program are Julian Anderson's Eden and Thomas Adès's Dances from "Powder Her Face".
