Handel's Rinaldo and Siroe, Re di Persia in Karlsruhe

Feb. 28, 2025

The Karlsruhe International Handel Festival opened with a beguiling work that deals with magic, madness and the turmoil of love, namely George Frideric Handel's Rinaldo, an opera that dramatically portrays the struggle between opposing forces. The production opened on February 17 with musical direction of Rinaldo Alessandrini and stage direction by Hinrich Horstkotte. Notably, this production utilized the rarely performed version of 1731, which ends magically and in peace. The Karlsruhe Handel Festival traditionally opens the annual series of festivals centred around the composer from Halle an der Saale, who was regarded as the “British Orpheus” from 1711 onwards and also includes a production of Handel's opera Siroe, Re di Persia opening on February 28. Here, a turbulent plot finds its conclusion in an act of clemency by the ruler.
