Halle Händel Edition in Productions Across North America

Two productions of beloved works by Georg Friedrich Händel take place throughout North America this month, both utilizing performing materials from the acclaimed Halle Händel Edition, a scholarly-critical complete edition published by Bärenreiter.

On February 6, the Indiana University Jacob’s School of Music mounts a production of Händel’s Alcina, conducted by Arthur Fagen, with direction by Chas Rader-Shieber. Additional performances take place February 7, 13 and 14 at Indiana's Musical Arts Center.

Early Music Vancouver delivers a performance of Theodora on February 14 at the Chan Centre, with Alexander Weimann leading the Pacific Baroque Orchestra and the Vancouver Cantata Singers. Soloists include Nathalie Paulin as Theodora and Krisztina Szabó as Irene, alongside countertenor Lawrence Zazzo, tenor Zachary Wilder, and bass-baritone Matthew Brook.

Performance material for Alcina and Theodora, as well as scores and critical commentary, are available as part of the Halle Händel Edition – the complete critical edition of the works of Händel. Edited by the Georg Friedrich Händel Society, the edition draws on the latest musicological findings to serve the needs of both performers and scholars. The edition includes alternative versions, discarded sections, as well as original drafts and fragments. Since 1991, the volumes comprising oratorios, large cantatas, and operas also include the printed libretto of the first performance in facsimile. Instructive examples of the source material, in facsimile, and critical reports are also included in each volume.
