Jonny Greenwood’s "smear" Debuts in the US with Either/Or Ensemble

On October 17, the enterprising contemporary ensemble Either/Or gives the US premiere of Jonny Greenwood’s smear, for two ondes martenots and chamber ensemble. Presented at Columbia University’s Miller Theatre, the concert is part of the far-reaching nine-day, SONiC Festival (Sounds of a New Century).

While Greenwood can often be heard thrashing on a multitude of instruments onstage in Radiohead, the composer’s chamber music has been characterized as employing an extraordinary tenderness. smear is a surprising and visceral work that takes full advantage of the mysterious and macabre sound that is unique to the ondes martenot, with hints at a romance that is reminiscent of early silent film scores and eliciting a sense of unearthly wonder. It was premiered in 2004 by the London Sinfonietta under a commission by the FuseLeeds Festival and has since been released on the London Sinfonietta Label as part of their Jerwood Series. Ondes martenot players Marie Bernard and Estelle Lemire will accompany the Either/Or ensemble in this exciting US premiere.

The program also features works by Raphaël Cendo, Hans Thomalla, Richard Carrick, Erin Gee, and Keeril Makan.
