On June 8, BBC Two broadcast award-winning filmmaker John Bridcut's documentary on the life of Sir Michael Tippett. In the first major film since the composer's death in 1998, Michael Tippett: The Shadow and The Light explores the life and music of one of Britain’s most original composers. Featuring testimony from renowned conductors, musicians and close friends, Bridcut’s latest film is a fascinating portrait of the delights and eccentricities of collaborating with Tippett.
The documentary features a series of specially-shot performances with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra delving into the enduring power of Tippett's music including excerpts from the Piano Concerto, The Heart's Assurance, Die Vision des Heiligen Augustinus, and A Child of Our Time. Harish Shankar conducts with guest appearances from an array of star soloists including Steven Osborne, Sean Shibe, Nadine Benjamin and Glasgow's Bearsden Choir.
