Gian Carlo Menotti Dies at Age 95

Feb. 01, 2007

Gian Carlo Menotti, the two-time Pulitzer Prize-winning composer and founder of the Spoleto arts festivals in Italy and the United States, died Thursday at a hospital in Monaco. He was 95. Born July 7, 1911, in Cadegliano near Lake Maggiore and the Swiss border, he was the sixth child of Alfonso and Ines Menotti. He began composing songs at age 7 and wrote his first opera at 11. His great success as both an opera composer and director made him one of the most revered and sought-after composers of his generation. His operas The Old Maid and The Thief as well as The Unicorn, The Gorgon & The Manticore continue to be favorites in both professional and university settings. Schott Music Corporation and European American Music Corporation mourn the loss of Gian Carlo Menotti and extend deepest sympathies to his family and friends.
