Gerald Barry in Residence at Victoria Symphony New Music Festival

The Victoria Symphony hosts Gerald Barry as composer-in-residence this month, part of its annual New Music Festival. The events, which take place from March 5-9, include four concerts highlighting the breadth and character of Barry’s oeuvre, with performances of several orchestral, chamber, solo and choral works composed between 1996 and 2013.

The festival opens on March 5 with a performance of Barry’s Lisbon, for piano and ensemble, by the University of Victoria’s Uvic Sonic Lab, conducted by Ajtony Csaba. The Vox Humana Chamber Choir follows with a performance Barry’s choral works on March 6, including The coming of winter, Long Time and O Tannenbaum. The performance takes place at Victoria’s Lutheran Church of the Cross and is conducted by Brian Wismath. The festival’s main event takes place on March 7 with Tania Miller leading the Victoria Symphony in performances of Barry’s La Jalousie Taciturne and Wiener Blut at Alix Goolden Hall. The Emily Carr String Quartet closes out the festival on March 9 at the Victoria Conservatory of Music with Barry’s String Quartet No. 4 “First Sorrow” and In the Asylum, for piano trio, with pianist Tzenka Dianova.
