George Benjamin’s Written on Skin has received the 2014 South Bank Sky Arts Award for Opera. The coveted award celebrates the best of British culture and achievement across all fields, including visual art, theatre, dance, and literature. Critics and audiences alike have hailed Katie Mitchell’s production at the Royal Opera House of Benjamin's riveting new work as a masterpiece of modern opera. The New York Times has called Written on Skin “an opera [that] audiences should demand to see onstage” and has been noted by the Telegraph as one of the best operas of 2013. A new production opens at the Landestheater Detmold in April.
