George Friedrich Haas’ “...Einklang freier Wesen…” Sees US Premiere at DePaul University
Oct. 05, 2011

On October 7, Michael Lewanski conducts DePaul University’s Ensemble 20+ in the US Premiere of Georg Friedrich Haas’ “…Eingklang freier Wesen…” for 10 instruments. Composed from 1994-1996, the work is written for “solo ensemble;” each of its instrumental parts can be performed by itself, or in sub-groups. These solo and smaller ensemble works are make up Haas' “…aus freier Lust… verbunden…” (“Bound … of free will”) work cycle. Haas writes,
As regards pitch, the parts are bound together by an identical harmonic structure, although it is to be noted that in the solo parts ‘harmony’ is thought of primarily as the effect of successive sound events. As for form, caesuras and units are formed in each individual part, not only independently of other instruments, but also simultaneously with them (as a sort of ‘solidarity’).
Lewanski, who is on the conducting faculty of the DePaul University School of Music, also conducts the Chicago-based new-music group Ensemble Dal Niente, and is the assistant conductor of the Civic Orchestra of Chicago. Ensemble 20+ is DePaul’s instrumental ensemble devoted to music of the 20th and 21st centuries.
