Gavin Bryars's The Heart of August Debuts with Ballet Vlaanderen

Oct. 01, 2017

Gavin Bryars's The Heart of August Debuts with Ballet Vlaanderen

The Heart of August, a new ballet score by Gavin Bryars, has its debut with Ballet Vlaanderen on October 7 in Gent. The premiere features set design by Claude Goyette and reunites Bryars with long-time choreographer collaborator Édouard Lock. Geert Callaert conducts the HERMESensemble in the performances, which take place October 7 to 15 in Gent and October 19 to 28 in Antwerp.

In this latest collaboration between Bryars and Lock, The Heart of August takes its thematic inspiration from the Orfeo myth; for the score Bryars notes his use of the waltzes of Johann Strauss and Gluck’s opera Orfeo e Euridice as source material. The work is scored for piano, accordion, two cellos and double bass, with the ensemble performing the score live on stage as is common in Lock’s work’s.

Also this month, Choral Arts Northwest joins the University of Washington Saxophone Quartet for two performances of Bryars’s The Fifth Century in Seattle (October 7) and Medina, Washington (October 8). The work was commissioned and premiered by The Crossing and the PRISM Saxophone Quartet in 2014, who also recorded the work on ECM Records.
