Gavin Bryars's Pneuma at Finnish National Opera Ballet & Orchestra
Oct. 01, 2018

The Finnish National Opera Ballet & Orchestra, led by conductor Philippe Béran and choreographer Carolyn Carlson, and featuring DJ Philip Jeck, perform Gavin Bryars's Pneuma for chamber orchestra and turntablist from September 29-October 20 at the Finnish National Opera in Helsinki.
Pneuma was composed following a number of successful collaborations between Gavin Bryars and Carolyn Carlson. The music gains its seven-part structure from the extracts of French philosopher Gaston Bachelard’s Air and Dreams that form the central ideas of the work. A rich, dark sonority is achieved in the orchestra with the omission of violins, flutes and oboes, and an improvisational turntable part, written for frequent collaborator Philip Jeck, contributes to the distinct soundworld typical of Bryars’s music.
