Friedrich Cerha at 90

February 17 marks the 90th birthday of Viennese composer Friedrich Cerha. An esteemed composer, conductor, teacher and musicologist, Cerha initially achieved international renown for his brilliantly crafted and powerful version of the third act of Alban Berg’s Lulu. 

Orchestras and ensembles across Europe are celebrating the occasion, including a performance by the Klangforum Wien on February 17. The program, conducted by Peter Rundel, includes Cerha’s Bruchstück, geträumt (2009) and Mouvements I-III (1959), alongside Georg Friedrich Haas’s … wie stille brannte das Licht (2009).

Leading up to Cerha’s anniversary, the Boulanger Trio performed several of Cerha's chamber works recorded on their latest CD at the Ultraschall Festival in Berlin, as well as a concert and discussion with the composer in Vienna.

Also this month, the Helsinki Philharmonic gives the territorial premiere of Cerha’s Konzert for cello and orchestra, led by Susanna Mälkki with cellist Bruno Weinmeister (Feb. 3, 4), Aziz Shokhakimov leads the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin in Cerha’s Konzert for percussion and orchestra with soloist Simone Rubino (Feb 15), and Hans Haselböck gives the world premiere of 6 Postludien for solo organ (Feb 22) at the Vienna Konzerthaus.

The coming months also include a performance of Cerha’s Baal-Gesänge at the Wiener Konzerthaus and the world premiere of Drei Sätze für Orchester by the Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of Cornelius Meister, at Vienna’s Musikverein.
