Frank Zappa's Peaches En Regalia Wins Grammy Award; The Music of Frank Zappa Sees Concerts In Germany, Barcelona

Mar. 02, 2009

Congratulations to Zappa Plays Zappa for taking home the Grammy Award for Best Rock Instrumental Performance! The band of Dweezil Zappa earned the award for their performance of Frank Zappa's Peaches En Regalia, which is available for hire from Schott Music in a version for orchestra arranged by Ali N. Askin.

This spring the music of Frank Zappa sees performances in Germany and Barcelona. On March 12 and 13, the ensemble musikFabrik presents works by Frank Zappa in their concerts at Konzerthaus Dortmund and the Philharmonie Essen. Zappa works on the concert programs include Zappa's infamous The Black Page, originally written for his long time drummer Terry Bozzio, T'Mershi Duween, and Big Swifty. Dirk Rothbrust, the percussionist for musikFabrik, comments on the occasion:

The Black Page in my opinion, is an ingenious piece of new music that reflects the Jazz/Rock atmosphere of the 70's. In our March 2009 program, we have combined some of Zappa's works from my favorite period of his-the albums Live at the Roxy and Elsewhere and Live in NY-with Varese's Ionisation, as well as other important percussion-ensemble works including Steve Reich's Drumming part 1, and traditional Amadinda music from Uganda.

On April 7 the BCN 216 ensemble of Barcelona, led by conductor Ernest Martínez Izquierdo, presents a portrait concert of Frank Zappa at Barcelona's L'Auditori including Zappa's Get Whitey, Be-Bop Tango, The Dog Breath Variations/Uncle Meat, G-Spot Tornado, Naval Aviation in Art?, Outrage at Valdez and others.
