Finnish and US Premieres of Music by Anna Meredith

Mar. 01, 2021

Anna Meredith's multi-media orchestral work Four Tributes to 4am received its Finnish premiere on February 4, as part of the opening concert of the Helsinki's Musica Nova festival. In his final season as Artistic Director of the festival, André de Ridder conducted the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra. Scored for chamber orchestra, video and electronics, Four Tributes to 4am was originally commissioned by Sinfonia VIVA during Anna Meredith's time there as its Composer-in-the-House (2010-11). The work is accompanied by animated visuals by the composer's sister, Eleanor Meredith. Each of the four movements is inspired by separate night-time locations in the city of Derby (where the piece was originally premiered by Sinfonia VIVA and André de Ridder in February 2011).

The Finnish performance of Four Tributes to 4am is available to watch online here, in a programme that also features works by Edgard Varése and Simon Steen-Andersen. Additionally, Anna Meredith's Octet for wind and brass ensemble received its US premiere as part of a streamed concert from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music on February 13, performed by the SFCM Wind Ensemble under the direction of Brad Hogarth.
