Esprit Orchestra Performs Henri Dutilleux's <em>The Shadows of Time</em> and Joji Yuasa's <em>Revealed Time</em>

On November 23, Toronto’s Esprit Orchestra and music director Alex Pauk offer the Canadian premiere of Henri Dutilleux’s The Shadows of Time alongside a performance of Joji Yuasa’s concerto for viola and orchestra, Revealed Time. The evening's theme — “Revealed Time" — honors the thematic and structural nature of both works: Yuasa’s music shapes time through a dramatic interplay between soloist and orchestra, while Dutilleux’s The Shadows of Time alludes to distant events and affirms a unity of time and place.

Dutilleux’s The Shadows of Time was commissioned by the Boston Symphony Orchestra and premiered by them in 1997 led by Seiji Ozawa. The work is an eloquent meditation on loss commemorating the half-century anniversary of the end of World War II. Dutilleux dedicated the work's third movement "to Anne Frank and all the children, innocents of the world", and employs a chorus of three children’s voices alongside the orchestra. Deutsche Grammophon's recording of The Shadows of Time, featuring the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France conducted by Esa-Pekka Salonen, received the 2013 Gramophone Award for Best Contemporary Recording.

Revealed Time was composed for the Suntory Music Foundation for soloist Rivka Golani and was premiered in Tokyo in 1986 with Hiroyuki Iwaki leading the Tokyo Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra. On November 23, violist Teng Li performs as soloist. Of the work, Yuasa writes:

The music is made up of one movement, consisting of four broad divisions, in which the energy as acoustic movement keeps reciprocating between the kinetic and the static, and which at the same time is intended, in a sense, to make a comprehensive survey of the sonorous reverberation in organized atonality and the perspective of tone colour pursued through [several works] that I have written since 1980.
