Dieter Ammann's The Piano Concerto "Gran Toccata" Performed in Hamburg by Andreas Haefliger with The Basel Sinfonietta and Titus Engel
May. 29, 2025
Dieter Ammann's The Piano Concerto "Gran Toccata" was performed to a full crowd at the Elbphilharmonie on May 10 as part of the Hamburg International Music Festival. The Basel Sinfonietta performed the work under the direction of Titus Engel, with Andreas Haefliger at the piano. "Gran Toccata" was composed for Andreas Haefliger, who premiered it in August 2019.
In the broad field of tension between the individual and the collective, which traditionally characterizes the genre, the composer is concerned with the most diverse forms of playing. He notes:
“So, for example, in the solo part there will be choices between several functions. The conventional roles of the piano both as accompanist to the orchestral action and of the unaccompanied individual are only two possible formats. Further function categories are the common solo accompagnato, which has its place, as does the ‘orchestral piano’ mentioned above. New terrain is opened up by expanding the action spectrum of the solo instrument. In addition there is a kinetic component, so that the music cannot simply be reduced to the realization of the musical text, but also reveals a visual side from the performative. This optical aspect can in the process even become primary information if in fact the solo part is blurred, concealed, swallowed or successively dissolved in the overall texture. The close interweaving of the functions of piano and orchestra ensures that virtuosity is not limited to the solo instrument, but is also strongly reflected in some orchestral passages.” Read more here.
