The Danish National Opera Presents the Danish Premiere of Bohuslav Martinů's The Greek Passion
Jul. 21, 2024
The Danish National Opera presents the Danish premiere performances of Bohuslav Martinů'sThe Greek Passion on August 23, 24, and 27 at Musikhuset Aarhus in Denmark. This co-production with Theater Osnabrück was premiered in Germany in 2022. Andreas Hotz conducts and Philipp Kochheim directs. Barbora Hamalová serves as the director of restaging at the Musikhuset Aarhus. Additional members of the creative team include Uta Fink (scenography and costume design), and Anders Poll (lighting design).
The composer who also authored the libretto, adapted the story from Roman Christus wird wieder gekreuzigt (Griechische Passion) by Nikos Kazantzakis. The opera highlights deeply human challenges, conflicts, and tragedies that arise when a group of refugees arrive at a Greek village whose inhabitants are in the midst of preparing for a Passion Play as they approach the Easter season. Dealing with timely matters including a refugee crisis and the relevance of Christian values, Den Jyske Opera calls the The Greek Passion "the most topical opera of the time." Fittingly, the Red Cross and the DRC Danish Refugee Council have partnered with the Danish National Opera to bring the production to life. Read more about their collaboration here.
