Christian Tetzlaff and National Symphony Orchestra Give the US Premiere of Jörg Widmann's <em>Violin Concerto</em>

Jörg Widmann’s Violin Concerto receives its U.S. premiere with the National Symphony Orchestra, under the baton of Christoph Eschenbach and with violinist Christian Tetzlaff, who gave the world premiere of the piece in 2007. Tetzlaff has been praised by the New York Times for his “sheer, explosive virtuosity.” The premiere takes place at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. on February 27, with additional performances on February 28 and March 1.

In a review of a recent performance, Andrew Clements of The Guardian writes:

Christian Tetzlaff’s account of the violin concerto Jörg Widmann composed for him in 2007 is so astonishingly vivid and secure that Widmann's impressive work at least has to share the spotlight with its dedicatee. With its huge expressive range and chiselled melodic lines, the solo writing hardly pauses for breath for the whole 28 minutes. Tetzlaff makes every second matter; one is carried along on the bleak journey Widmann invents. 

The Cleveland Orchestra, under Franz Welser-Möst, gave the U.S. premiere of Widmann’s Teufel Amor: Sinfonischer Hymnos nach Schiller on January 16. The orchestra’s 2014-2015 season includes a focus on Jörg Widmann, with performances of many of the composer’s key works, including Bayerisch-babylonischer Marsch, Con brio: Konzertovertüre für orchester, Flûte en suite, and Lied. Performances of these pieces are scattered throughout the orchestra’s tour, which includes cities such as Berlin, Vienna, Linz, Lucerne, Amsterdam, Paris, and London, in addition to performances at Severance Hall in Cleveland, Ohio.
