Chaya Czernowin at Deutschlandfunk New Music Forum and Royal College of Music; US Premiere of <em>HIDDEN</em> at Institute of Contemporary Art in Boston

Several major events this month feature the music of Chaya Czernowin, with the highly anticipated US premiere of HIDDEN, for string quartet and electronics with the JACK Quartet and IRCAM, as well as residencies at the Deutschlandfunk New Music Forum and the Royal College of Music in London.

On April 10, the Deutschlandfunk New Music Forum closes its 2016 festival with a concert of works by Chaya Czernowin. The program includes Czernowin’s Adiantum capillus-Veneris (Etudes in Fragility) for solo voice and breath (with the world premiere of part III for one live and two recorded voices), performed by mezzo-soprano Inbal Hever, as well as her monumental work for string quartet and electronics, HIDDEN, performed by the JACK Quartet and IRCAM.

Later this month, the Royal College of Music hosts Czernowin as composer-in-residence with a festival of concerts featuring her work. The festival kicks off on April 15 with a concert of chamber works, including Six miniatures and a simultaneous song, While Liquid Amber, Adiantum Capillus-Veneris and Anea Crystal: Seed I. On April 16, Johannes Harneit conducts the RCM Symphony Orchestra and New Perspectives Ensemble in performances of Lovesong, Wintersongs IV: Wounds/Mistletoe, Slow Summer Stay II: Lakes, White Wind Waiting and At the fringe of our gaze

On April 29, the Institute of Contemporary Art in Boston hosts the JACK Quartet and IRCAM for the US premiere of HIDDEN. Czernowin describes HIDDEN as “a very slow moving, 45-minute experience, which transforms the ear into an eye.” The work is a striking aural landscape that offers a unique opportunity for sonic observation and perceptual exploration. The program also includes Jonathan Harvey’s String Quartet No. 4, with live electronics.
