Carl Vine's Trombone Concerto Five Hallucinations Debuts with Chicago Symphony Orchestra

On October 6, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra presents the world premiere of Carl Vine’s Five Hallucinations, conducted by James Gaffigan.

Written for the orchestra’s own trombonist Michael Mulcahy, the new five-movement concerto was co-commissioned with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra and is based on renowned author and clinical neurologist Oliver Sacks’s celebrated book Hallucinations. Like the book, Vine's concerto explores psychedelic hallucinatory experiences. The composer elaborates on the piece:

In his book Hallucinations, the acclaimed British-American neurologist Oliver Sacks chronicles a wide range of hallucinatory conditions reported by his patients throughout his illustrious career. I have chosen five of those cases as the inspiration for this concerto, creating an imaginary musical representation of each mental state.

Additional performances of Five Hallucinations take place October 7 and 8 at Chicago Symphony Center. The Sydney Symphony Orchestra gives the work’s Australian premiere in 2017.
