A Harold Lloyd Comedic Double Feature with the Music of Carl Davis

On March 10-11, the Indianapolis Chamber Orchestra, in collaboration with the Eiteljorg Museum of American Indians and Western Art, presents a Harold Lloyd comedic silent film double feature. Matthew Kraemer leads the ensemble through Carl Davis’s original scores to Harold Lloyd's An Eastern Westerner (1920) and Safety Last (1923). In "An Eastern Westerner," a rich, spoiled boy from New York City is sent to his uncle’s ranch in an effort to correct his behavior. Displays of bravery and romance soon follow.  In the romantic comedy "Safety Last," a boy from the country travels to the city to seek his fortune. The film was a huge commercial success in its day and solidified Harold Lloyd’s position as a major motion picture director.

Of the composer, the Musical Observer notes,

“Carl Davis has made an astonishing impact on music in Britain. He has performed an integral role in the reappraisal of silent film classics, the raising to hitherto unheard of standards of the once humble television theme tune, and now as a conductor/composer in the world of symphonic music.”
