Cantori New York Performs US Premiere of Arvo Pärt's Alleluia-Tropus

May. 04, 2010

May 15 marks the US premiere of Arvo Pärt’s Alleluia-Tropus as Mark Shapiro leads Cantori New York in Arvo Pärt's spare, beautiful polyphonic work for choir and eight cellos at Church of the Holy Trinity in New York City.

Sung in Church Slavonic, the piece employs a liturgical text dedicated to Saint Nicholas of Myra, whose resonance with Pärt first emerged in the composer's Triodion of 1998. Alleluia-Tropus received its world premiere in 2008 in Bari, Italy, the resting place of Nicholas’ relics.

Arvo Pärt turns 75 in September, and as a preemptive celebration Boston University hosted a conference devoted to the man and his music entitled Arvo Pärt and Contemporary Spirituality in March. The conference examined Pärt's music using and developing cross-disciplinary methodologies drawing on media studies, theological studies and different analytical approaches to music.
