Bruce MacCombie’s <em>Chelsea Tango</em> at the Albany Symphony Orchestra

On December 17, the Albany Symphony Orchestra performs Bruce MacCombie’s Chelsea Tango on a program that features violinist Joshua Bell. Chelsea Tango, which MacCombie composed in 1991, is dedicated to the New York City neighborhood of Chelsea, where MacCombie lived and worked for twelve years. MacCombie writes:

The impetus to write a tango came from a variety of sources. For one thing, I have long admired the tango, the street music and the dance, which are both urban and urbane, dramatic yet understated, filled with suspense, but with a dash of ennui. […] Contrasting city pulses led to the idea of combining a fanfare with a slightly syncopated tango.
