Boston University's Opera Institute Presents Peter Eötvös's <em>Angels in America</em>

Boston University’s Opera Institute mounts a production of Peter Eötvös’s Angels in America in a run of four performances opening February 19. Based on playwright Tony Kushner’s award winning play and featuring a libretto by Mari Mezei, the two-act opera was commissioned by the Théâtre du Châtelet Paris where it premiered in 2004 directed by Philippe Calvario and conducted by the composer. Boston University’s production presents Eötvös’s 2012 revised version, with stage direction by Jim Petosa and conducted by William Lumpkin. Of the work, Eötvös writes:

The two-part stage play (Millennium Approaches and Perestroika) by Tony Kushner is one of the most important dramatic works in 20th-century American literature… Kushner describes the American neurosis of the turn of the millennium as a dark nightmare in a spectacular theatrical hallucination… In this play, hallucination and reality merge perfectly. It is mainly this quality that has encouraged me to work with this subject… I put less emphasis on the political line than Kushner; I rather focus on the passionate relationships, on the highly dramatic suspense of the wonderful text, [and] on the permanently uncertain state of the visions.

Performances take place February 19 through 22 at the BU Theatre in Boston, Massachusetts.
