Bernard Rands in Concert Across the US

The month of March offers ample opportunities for admirers of the music of Bernard Rands to hear several of his works across the US.

Axiom Brass joins the Grand Rapids Symphony for two performances of Rands’s Adieu, for brass quintet and string orchestra, on March 6 and 7. The performances take place at DeVos Performance Hall in Grand Rapids, Michigan, led by David Lockington. On March 14, Axiom Brass performs Rands’s Fanfare at Northern Illinois University as part of the Chicago Brass Festival, as well as on March 23 in Blue Hill, Maine.

On March 24th, vocalist Julia Bentley performs two of Rands’s vocal works alongside the Nextet Ensemble at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. Bentley, who has performed several of Rands’s vocal works in the past, joins as soloist in Rands’s recent Folk Songs, for voice and chamber ensemble. Folk Songs, which premiered at Tanglewood in 2014, offers a kind of musical journey through the composer’s life, comprising a cycle of songs inspired by nine different parts of the world where Rands either lived or extensively visited. The program also features a performance of Rands’s Memo No. 7 for solo female voice.

Additional performances this month include Rands’s Three Pieces for Piano on March 5 with pianist Amy Briggs at Notre Dame University, String Quartet No. 2 by the Amernet String Quartet at Haverford College on March 20, as well as performances of Music for Liza on March 14 and London Serenade on March 24 with the Cleveland Contemporary Youth Orchestra. The prestigious Norwegian wind ensemble Sarpsborg Janitsjarkorps rounds out the month with a performance of Rands's Unending Lightning on March 20 in Bergen, Norway.
