Beat Furrer Awarded Grand Austrian State Prize

Austrian composer Beat Furrer celebrates his 60th birthday on December 6. As a prolific composer, conductor, educator, and founder of Klangforum Wien and “impuls” academy in Graz (International Ensemble and Composers Academy for Contemporary Music), Furrer is firmly established among the most influential compositional and artistic voices of his generation. On December 4, Klangforum Wein honors Furrer with a birthday portrait concert featuring a “birthday serenade” followed by three of his recent works: linea dell’orizzonte for chamber ensemble, Xenos for large ensemble, and Ira-Arca for bass flute and double bass.

In a ceremony later this spring, Furrer receives the prestigious Grand Austrian State Prize, bestowed annually to an Austrian artist for exceptional work. In its announcement, the Austrian Arts Senate wrote of Furrer’s music as having a “distinctive style, characterized by the human voice and the interrelation of sound, language and visual effects, using sophisticated texts.”
