BBC Proms Features World Premiere of Huw Watkins' Violin Concerto
Jul. 08, 2010
This summer the BBC Proms features a number of works from the Schott Music, Universal Edition and Faber Music catalogues. On August 17, Huw Watkins’ Violin Concerto is premiered by the BBC Symphony Orchestra led by Edward Gardner with violinist Alina Ibragimova, for whom the piece was written. The concerto emerged as a result of the composer's growing collaboration with the violinist, the two first having worked together when, as a BBC New Generation Artist, she invited Watkins to write her a solo work. A concerto was the natural next step for the young, dynamic award-winning violinist and indeed this is the first concerto Ibragimova has had written especially for her. The concert will be broadcast live on BBC Radio 3 and BBC 4 TV. Another performance not to be missed is the world premiere of Tansy Davies' Wild Card by the BBC Symphony Orchestra and Jiří Bělohlávek on September 8.
