New Productions of Dvořák's Rusalka in Liège, Nice, and Berlin Use Bärenreiter's Critical Edition

Dec. 20, 2023

In Antonín Dvořák's lyrical fairy tale Rusalka, music plays a major role: the water nymph gives up her beautiful voice to be able to love a human prince. The tragic story, based on Hans Christian Andersen's fairy tale about the little mermaid as well as the characters Undine and Melusine, is one of the best-known and most popular Czech operas today.

Initially edited as part of the Dvořák Complete Edition in 1960, the new critical Bärenreiter edition presents the opera with a revised and reliable vocal text. Among the numerous performances of the work are three notable productions based on the new edition. Opéra Royal de Wallonie presents Rusalka in Liège from January 25 through February 4, conducted by Giampaolo Bisanti and directed by Rodula Gaitanou. Opéra Nice Côte d'Azur's production of Rusalka runs from January 26-30, under the musical direction of Elena Schwarz and stage direction of Jean-Philippe Clarac and Olivier Deloeuil. Additionally, the Berlin State Opera will premiere Rusalka on February 4 in a new production by Kornél Mundruczó, under the baton of Robin Ticciati.
