Bärenreiter Critical Editions at Opera Theatre of Saint Louis and San Francisco Opera
Jun. 04, 2015

Two major productions utilizing Bärenreiter’s critical editions take place this month, including the first ever US performance of Georg Friedrich Händel’s Riccardo primo, re d’Inghilterra at Opera Theatre of Saint Louis.
Led by Grant Llewellyn and directed by Lee Blakeley, Opera Theatre of Saint Louis’s production of Riccardo primo opens on June 7 and stars Tim Mead as King Richard and Susannah Biller as Costanza. Edited by Terence Best in conjunction with the Georg Friedrich Händel Society, Bärenreiter’s Halle Händel Edition draws on the latest musicological findings to serve the needs of both performers and scholars and includes alternative versions, discarded sections, as well as original drafts and fragments.
Also opening June 7 is a production of Hector Berlioz’s Les Troyens at San Francisco Opera. One of the largest and most magnificent pieces in the repertory, Les Troyens is presented with direction by David McVicar and Leah Hausman and conducted by Donald Runnicles, with Susan Graham as Dido, Bryan Hymel as Aeneas, and Anna Caterina Antonacci and Michaela Martens as Cassandra. San Francisco Opera’s production runs through July 1. Under the editorial guide of the Berlioz Centenary Committee, London, the New Berlioz Edition includes the first complete edition of many of the composer’s works, including Les Troyens, which has made these masterpieces available to the opera public for the first time.
