Awadagin Pratt and the New World Symphony Premiere Alvin Singleton's Time Past, Time Future
Apr. 01, 2021
On April 25, Chad Goodman leads the New World Symphony in the world premiere of Alvin Singleton's Time Past, Time Future featuring Awadagin Pratt as piano soloist. Carman Moore describes Alvin Singleton's latest composition:
"Most pieces of music, even ones we love, are to be “listened to.” Alvin Singleton’s little gem for string orchestra and solo piano Time Past, Time Future is more; it is a piece to be experienced. This is not the traditional concerto with the orchestra playing the role of host and the soloist as guest. Here the two elements collaborate in constructing a musical experience. This new work comes at the listener from some unusual places. Dynamic contrast becomes the principal theme and engine of the piece, alternating back and forth in the work. Time Past, Time Future is a work of extremes that seeks and ultimately finds balance. Even the title is a balancing act."
Recently, Continuum Contemporary Music featured Alvin Singleton's In My Own Skinas part of their "Press Play" series. The insightful episode can be viewed here:
