Austrian Premiere of Georg Friedrich Haas's Morgen und Abend

Feb. 15, 2022

Georg Friedrich Haas's highly expressive setting of Morgen und Abend was an extraordinary triumph at its premiere at the Royal Opera House Covent Garden, London in 2015. Following performances at the Deutsche Oper Berlin and Theater Heidelberg, this stirring opera received its Austrian premiere at Oper Graz on February 12 in a production by Immo Karaman. Performances run through April 24.

Morgen und Abend tells the story of an old man who finds his world has drastically changed: he meets his wife and best friend, who have both passed away, and can no longer communicate with his beloved daughter. Gradually, he realizes that he, too, is dead. The opera marks the second collaboration between Haas and librettist Jon Fosse, who share an interest in depicting intense and fluctuating emotional states, as well as the interplay between light and dark. Haas sought to create otherworldly sound environments to explore the state of death that Brandauer’s character experiences, and looked to translate light into sound. The composer notes:

"Of course we have no idea, no real idea, what will happen with us when we go from life to death. But we know some experiences of people who were very near to this, and they all speak about a strong light. And I transform this light into the opera."
