Arvo Pärt’s Silhouette in US Premiere

Mar. 01, 2011

The Carnegie Mellon Philharmonic Orchestra, under the direction of Ronald Zollman, presents the American premiere performances of Arvo Pärt’s Silhouette beginning this month. Following the preview performance on March 18 at Carnegie Mellon’s Collage Concert, the orchestra moves to the stage of the Carnegie Music Hall of Pittsburgh for the world premiere on April 6, followed by a performance on April 8 at the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC. The Philharmonic rounds out the premiere run with a performance in Upper St. Clair, PA on April 12. Originally commissioned for the Orchestre de Paris and Paavo Järvi in 2010, Silhouette is inspired by the architecture of the Eiffel Tower. Pärt writes:

From the perspective of a composer, Eiffel's tower has many features which compare to the structure of a piece of music–the connections between the structural elements, the transparency of the construction, and much more. Even stasis, such an important aspect of architecture, is also a key element of a piece of music. As regards my work Silhouette, the piece came out short and light, like a dance, a waltz, something dizzying–perhaps like the winds which caress this pointed colossus.
