Arvo Pärt Sees World Premiere of Symphony No. 4 by Esa-Pekka Salonen and Los Angeles Philharmonic; Pärt's L'abbé Agathon in World Premiere Staging at Works & Process at the Guggenheim Museum
Dec. 02, 2008
On Saturday, January 10 Esa-Pekka Salonen and the Los Angeles Philharmonic present the world premiere of Arvo Pärt's Symphony No. 4, "Los Angeles", marking the final commission of Maestro Salonen's tenure at the LA Philharmonic. Symphony No. 4 signals an essential turning point in Pärt's compositional career as no other large-scale piece written after his third symphony in 1971 could be dubbed a symphony because of their adherence to the Tintinnabuli style, despite their structure and scope. Maestro Salonen and the LA Philharmonic present one follow up performance of Symphony No. 4 on Sunday, January 11.On January 11 and 12, American Opera Projects in conjunction with the Works & Process series at the Guggenheim present an all-Arvo Pärt evening featuring L'abbé Agathon in a world premiere operatic version re-imagined by the French visual artist Sophie Calle and sung by renowned soprano Lauren Flanigan. L'abbé Agathon will be performed to a backdrop of a film installation by Ms. Calle and played by musicians of the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra. Ms. Flanigan sings the work in a new English translation by Cori Ellison. New York City Ballet dancers Wendy Whelan, Albert Evans and Sébastien Marcovici perform in choreographer Christopher Wheeldon's Liturgy set to Pärt's Fratres and After the Rain, a pas de deux set to Pärt's Spiegel im Spiegel. David Jackson conducts the performances at the Peter B. Lewis Theater at the Guggenheim. Commissioned by American Opera Projects and Works & Process at the Guggenheim with support from The Peter Jay Sharp Foundation, this performance of L'abbé Agathon marks the first of a series of monodramas that AOP will present throughout 2009.
