Arvo Pärt Featured as Guest Composer at Canterbury’s Sounds New Festival

Canterbury’s Sounds New contemporary music festival, which runs from May 20 through 29, 2011, features Arvo Pärt this year as their Guest Composer. Pärt’s works are performed throughout the expansive ten-day festival, which is themed Baltic+. A documentary about Pärt will be screened, and he will take part in a public lecture prior to the performance of his works by the Cello Octet Amsterdam on May 26.

Festival events featuring Arvo Pärt’s music include:

May 20: The London Sinfonietta performs Pärt’s Passacaglia and Peteris Vasks’ Flute Sonata at Augustine Hall at 7:30pm.

May 20: A film screening of Arvo Pärt: 24 Preludes for a Fugue, a documentary about Pärt by Dorian Supin, which won a 2002 UNESCO Prize.

May 26: Arvo Pärt gives a talk at Christ Church University’s Lecture Theater, at 3:00pm, and The Cello Octet Amsterdam performs the English Premiere of Pärt’s Summa, O-Antiphonen, and Da Pacem Domine at the Canterbury Cathedral Crypt at 8:00pm.

May 27: The Canterbury Cathedral Choir, led by David Flood, perform an Evensong including Pärt’s I am the True Vine and Magnificat at 5:30pm.

May 27: The Choir of Kings College, Cambridge, and the Philharmonia Orchestra perform Cantus in Memory of Benjamin Britten and the UK Premiere of Adam’s Lament in the Canterbury Cathedral nave, at 7:30pm.

May 29: The Kent County Youth Choir, CCCU Orchestra Members, and Canterbury Christ Church University’s CANTATA! Choir perform Pärt’s Magnificat at Canterbury’s Augustine Hall, at 11:00am.
