Arvo Pärt's La Sindone Premieres at Juilliard FOCUS! Festival

The New Juilliard Ensemble gives the world premiere this month of the revised version of Arvo Pärt’s La Sindone, for strings, brass, and percussion, under the direction of Joel Sachs. The performance, which takes place on January 24 at the Peter Jay Sharp Theater, is part of the Juilliard School’s FOCUS! Festival and commemorates the 80th anniversary of Alfred Schnittke’s birth with music by his circle of composers. The Festival also features performances of additional works by Pärt, including his Fratres for string quartet, Annum per annum for organ solo, and My Heart’s in the Highlands for countertenor, violin and viola.

Later this month, Pärt’s Swan Song for orchestra receives its world premiere by the Vienna Philharmonic, under the baton of Marc Minkowski. The original version of this piece, Littlemore Tractus, was scored for choir and organ, based on text from a sermon of nineteenth century English priest and poet John Henry Newman. The premiere takes place on January 29 at the Großes Festspielhaus in Salzburg.
