Arvo Pärt Festival in Portland

From February 5 to 12, the Cappella Romana choir in Portland, Oregon presents an Arvo Pärt Festival—the first-ever North American festival celebrating the music of the revered Estonian composer. The festival features an ambitious curation of Pärt's chamber music, complete organ works, and choral music including the US premiere of his recent Alleluia-Tropus.

Originally scored for SATB chorus and eight cellos, Alleluia-Tropus is a three-minute work which Pärt later arranged for mixed choir and string orchestra. The piece was inspired by Pärt’s long-standing interest in the fourth-century figure St. Nicholas of Myra. The score uses texts from the Christian liturgy dedicated to St. Nicholas and is sung in Church Slavonic.

Other highlights of the Festival include a performance of Pärt’s complete organ works with organist Bruce Neswick on February 10, a candlelight performance of Passio on February 11, and the Missa syllabica sung in Latin Mass on February 12.

Also this month, Paavo Järvi leads the NKH Symphony Orchestra in the Japanese premiere of Pärt’s Silhouette "Hommage à Gustave Eiffel”, a work composed expressely for Järvi in 2010. The performance takes place February 11 at NHK Hall in Shibuya, Japan.
