Arvo Pärt Days 2019
Sep. 01, 2019

The Arvo Pärt Days 2019 festival opened on August 31, presenting a large number of concerts featuring a wide range of music by Arvo Pärt, as well as works by others. The opening night of the festival featured Thomas Adés conducting the Estonian National Symphony orchestra and the Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir in a program featuring Pärt's Stabat Mater and Adés's Totentanz, the latter inspired by Bernt Notke's medieval painting, one of the versions of which can be found in Estonia in St Nicholas's Church in Tallinn. Additionally, the program included the world premiere of "Death Dance" - a dance piece choreographed and performed by Ingmar Jõela for this occasion, as well as appearances by mezzo-soprano Christianne Stotijn and baritone Mark Stone.
The festival featured several other highlights. On September 2, composer-conductor James MacMillan led the Tallin Chamber Orchestra in a performance of the concert version of his opera Clemency alongside Pärt's Sarah Was Ninety Years Old. On September 4 and 11 young Estonian composer, Pärt Uusberg, led the same orchestra in a new piece written for the festival and several of Arvo Pärt's most influential works including Magnificat and Te Deum. Finally, special concerts on September 5 and 7 featured countertenor David James performing early music by Purcell and Perotin as well as works by Arvo Pärt, Gavin Bryars, and others.
