Aribert Reimann at 80

This month marks the 80th birthday of Aribert Reimann and four celebratory concerts are scheduled in his native city of Berlin: two featuring his chamber works and two orchestral concerts organized by the Deutsche Oper Berlin and the Deutsche Symphonie-Orchester Berlin. The concerts include Metamorphosen for ten instruments, Adagio for string quartet, and selections from his series of works titled Solo for cello and oboe (March 4), as well as “… oder sol les Tod bedeuten?” for soprano and string quartet (March 7) and Tarde for soprano and orchestra (March 12, 13). Reimann has been published exclusively by Schott Music for 55 years.

Reimann's inexhaustible inspiration and discipline combined with his stringent standards of composition throughout his career have resulted in timeless works in which textures of intense complexity are blended with comprehensibility and sensuality. Every note in Reimann’s work has evolved out of necessity and each musical idea is an essential element of an overall concept: Reimann's music is far removed from all comfort zones, transcends limits and is daringly extreme, but never merely for effect.
