Andrew Norman's Stop Motion in World Premiere with Calder Quartet

On May 30, the Calder Quartet presents the world premiere of Stop Motion, a new string quartet by Andrew Norman. The premiere takes place at Walt Disney Concert Hall in Las Angeles, CA as part of the Los Angeles Philharmonic’s Next On Grand Festival, celebrating contemporary American music.

Stop Motion was commissioned by the Calder Performing Arts Association. The piece is inspired by the work of the Calder Quartet’s namesake, American sculptor Alexander Calder, known for his iconic kinetic sculptures and mobiles. Like Calder’s works, Norman’s quartet explores the idea of gradual transformation from one musical object into another.

Alongside Norman’s new work, the program also features works by Tristan Perich, Caroline Shaw, Bryce Dessner and Philip Glass.
