Andrew Norman's <em>Play</em> in Cincinnati and Helsinki

Andrew Norman’s widely lauded orchestral work Play, recently named the 2017 Grawemeyer Award winner for Music Composition, receives performances in the US and Europe throughout the month.

On January 13, Matthias Pintscher leads the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra in a performance of Play as part of the orchestra’s MusicNOW festival, curated by Bryce Dessner. The festival also includes performances of Pintscher’s orchestral work idyll, György Ligeti’s Concerto for Violin and Orchestra with soloist Pekka Kuusisto as well as Timo Andres’s piano concerto The Blind Banister. Following the performance in Cincinnati, Play receives its European premiere on February 1 with André de Ridder conducting the Finnish Radio Symphony.

Regarding Play, Grawemeyer Award Director Marc Satterwhite wrote:

Play combines brilliant orchestration, which is at once wildly inventive and idiomatic, with a terrific and convincing musical shape based on a relatively small amount of musical source material. It ranges effortlessly from brash to intimate and holds the listener’s interest for all of its 47 minutes—no small feat in these days of shortened attention spans.

Also this month, Andrew Gourlay leads the San Diego Symphony in a performance of Norman’s piano concerto Suspend with soloist Inon Barnatan on January 6 as part of the orchestra’s “Our American Music” Festival. On January 25, composer and conductor John Adams leads the Berlin Philharmonic’s Orchestra Academy in a performance of Norman’s Try.
