Andrea Lorenzo Scartazzini's Enigma Premiered by Simon Gaudenz and the Jena Philharmonic Orchestra
Feb. 28, 2025
Andrea Lorenzo Scartazzini's cycle of works on Mahler's symphonies recently accomplished another milestone: Enigma for orchestra was premiered together with Mahler's Symphony No. 9 on February 14 in Jena alongside his composition Anima for alto, choir and orchestra. Anima is a journey of the soul based on the text of Goethe's Gesang der Geister über den Wassern. The concert took place in Jena under the direction of Simon Gaudenz, the initiator of the Mahler-Scartazzini cycle, with alto Evelyn Krahe, and the Jena Philharmonic Orchestra where Scartazzini is Composer In Residence. Scartazzini titled Enigma, his new, filigree orchestral piece “Mit äußerster Zartheit” (with the utmost tenderness) – a structure unfolds which is characterized by floating airy sounds, and leads over to Mahler's last completed symphony, which seems to speak of the afterlife.
