Andrea Lorenzo Scartazzini's <em>Edward II</em> Debuts with Deutsche Oper Berlin

On February 19, the Deutsche Oper Berlin mounts the world premiere of Edward II, a new opera by Swiss composer Andrea Lorenzo Scartazzini. The production, directed by Christof Loy and conducted by Thomas Søndergard, with set design by Annette Kurz, runs through March 9 and stars Michael Nagy, Agneta Eichenholz, Ladislav Elgr and Andrew Harris. 

Scartazzini’s Edward II features a libretto by Thomas Jonigk that draws on texts by Christopher Marlowe, Ralph Holinsheds and the “Vita Edwardi”. The work expands the narrative of the historical figure Edward II of England and his controversial relationship with Piers de Gaveston to explore society and its past and present attitudes towards homosexuality. Edward II, long considered an icon of the gay movement, has inspired countless artistic works including Christopher Marlowe’s 1593 play (on which the libretto is based), as well as a play adaptation by Bertolt Brecht and a 1992 film by Derek Jarman.

In recent years, Scartazzini has made a name for himself as an opera composer with an ear for the powerful language of musical theatre. His latest operatic work, Der Sandmann, premiered in 2012 at the Theater Basel with Christof Loy directing.
