Alvin Singleton's Chamber Music in New York and the United Kingdom

Alvin Singleton's chamber music can be heard on both sides of the Atlantic this month in performances at the Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival in the UK and as part of Ensemble Pi’s 13th Peace Project Concert in Brooklyn, NY.

On November 10, New York’s Ensemble Pi gives a performance of Singleton’s Jasper Drag, for clarinet, piano and violin, at Roulette in Brooklyn, NY. The program, titled “Black Lives Matter,” features commissioned and new works in solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement. Jasper Drag, which Singleton composed in 2000 for the Verdehr Trio, takes its title from the June 7, 1998 Jasper, Texas incident, wherein a black man was dragged to his death after being chained to a pickup truck by three white men. Singleton writes: 

This composition is not intended to tell a story, or even to evoke images. Jasper Drag is meant to be a marker on the collective memory of a nation still growing. The score is inscribed to the memory of James Byrd, Jr., the victim of this racially motivated act.”

On November 25, the cellist Seth Parker Woods performs the UK premiere of Singleton’s Argoru II, for solo cello, presented by the 2016 Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival. The performance takes place at Phipps Hall at the University of Huddersfield.
